                                                 Is Saving Scriptural?

Benjamin Franklin once said, "A penny saved is a penny earned." I enjoyed one young child's recasting of that familiar proverb to, " A penny saved ... isn't much!" This youngster had it right! It takes more than just a few cents to save for the education of our children, our retirement and other future expenses.

The Bible and Catholic teaching have a lot to say about money, including saving. These teachings stress the importance of maintaining balance. On the one hand, the Bible makes it very clear that we should save for future needs. Just look at the story of Joseph and Pharaoh in Genesis 41. What does Joseph do when he is forewarned that there will be seven years of plenty to be followed by seven years of famine? He sets aside twenty percent of each year's produce during the good years, to meet the needs of the people during the famine. On the other hand, the Lord warns us against the dangers of hoarding and coveting in the parable of the rich man in Luke chapter 12.

One of the most effective ways to maintain balance when it comes to saving is to also be generous. Both your giving and saving should be planned as part of your responsibility as a Steward of Providence.

Here is a sample of the short content provided each week except for the once a month slot filled by the quarter page article.

Deuteronomy 10:14 says, "Behold, to the Lord your God belong heaven and the heaven of heavens, the earth with all that is in it." One couple I know used to have the typical "his" versus "hers" arguments over money until they realized all they had belonged to the Lord. Something to think about.
